Josh Aerie is a sought-after performing and recording artist. Josh’s career highlights span a wide array of credits and accomplishments, including major-label recordings, nationally-syndicated television performances and film soundtracks. He has performed in a diverse array of venues across the country, from the Kennedy Center, Tanglewood and the Library of Congress to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Roxy and the House of Blues. In recognition of his artistry, Josh was awarded an ARAC/McKnight Foundation Artist Fellowship in 2010.


Recitalist

Josh has appeared in concert throughout the U.S. and Europe in solo and collaborative performances. A proponent of new and under-performed music, he enjoys working closely with composers and series producers to spotlight new works alongside the standard cello repertoire. Recent concerts have found Josh performing sonatas by Barber, Beethoven, Debussy, Foote and Sowash. Other notable performances include the complete Beethoven Sonatas, the Ibert Cello Concerto with the University of Colorado Wind Symphony, American Vignettes by Stephen Paulus and sonatas by Brahms and Shostakovich.

“Seasonal Breezes: Five Chamber Works by Rick Sowash Featuring Josh Aerie,” is an album of premier recordings of chamber works by Cincinnati composer Rick Sowash. Includes the Cello Sonata, and works composed for Josh, the Sylvan Trio, and friends.



“A Christmas Ceremony for Flute & Cello,” composed by Rick Sowash for Josh and flutist Betty Braunstein, has aired on classical and internet radio stations across the country.



“Nostalgia,” an album of works by composer Justin Rubin on the Innova/Naxos-Direct label, also receives national airplay and was a semi-finalist for a GRAMMY award.

Chamber Musician

Josh is passionate about chamber music and is always eager to explore new works as well as pieces from the standard repertoire. A proponent for new music, he is often involved with commissioning and recording works for composers across the country. Josh finds great reward engaging in the creative collaborative process with composers and fellow instrumentalists alike.



Josh is a founding member of the Duluth-based Gichigami Trio. Noted for their adventurous programming, the piano trio has performed across the upper Midwest and appeared on PBS-TV throughout Minnesota. The Gichigami are artist-faculty at the annual Woodland Chamber Music Workshop. The Trio includes violinist Laurie Bastian and pianist Samuel Black.



Josh is also founding member of the Sylvan Trio. Comprised of the eclectic instrumentation of flute, cello and piano, the Sylvans explore new music as well as pieces from the standard repertoire. Performances include chamber society series in the Midwest, a showcase concert in Cincinnati featuring premiers by composer Rick Sowash, and a spring, 2015 tour. Stay tuned for their premier recording! The Trio includes flutist Suzanne Bona Hatem and pianist Dr. Greg Kostraba.


Josh was a member of Trillium, the University of Wisconsin-Superior’s faculty trio, from 2010-2013. Trillium includes violinist Erin Aldridge and pianist Beth Gilbert.


Josh was cellist in the Nacht Quartet, the University of Colorado’s Graduate String Quartet in Residence. Mentored by the Takacs Quartet, the Nacht won both first prize and the audience choice award at the Bruce Ekstrand Memorial Competition. They subsequently spent a summer in Berlin, Germany as the inaugural quartet in a residency and exchange program at the famous Hans Eisler conservatory.

Television & Film

Josh can be heard on soundtracks for HBO Documentary Films, Landlocked Films and in MTV promotional trailers. He has appeared on-screen in nationally-syndicated television programs including a solo cello performance on ABC.
